A Useful Lesson
In England nobody under the age of 18 is allowed to drink in a bar. Mr. Thompson used to go to a bar near his house quite often, but he never took his son, Tom, because he was too young.
Then when Tom had his eighteenth birthday, Mr. Thompson took him to his usual bar for the first time. They drank for half an hour, and then Mr. Thompson said to his son, "Dow, Tom, I want to teach you a useful lesson. You must always be careful not to drink too much.""How do you know when you've had enough?"asked Tom.
"Well, I'll tell you. Do you see those two lights at the end of the bar? When they seem to have become four, you've had enough and should go home.""But, Dad,"said Tom, "I can only see one light at the end of the bar."

酒吧喝酒，但是他从来不带他的儿子汤姆去，因为他还太小。
当汤姆过十八岁生日时，汤姆森先生第一次把儿子带到了他常去的那家酒吧。他们喝了半小时的酒后，汤姆森对儿子说， “汤姆，现在我想给你上有用的一课。你必须时刻小心，不要喝得太多。” “你怎么知道你已经喝得差不多了呢？”汤姆问。
“好，让我来告诉你。你看到酒吧那头的两盏灯吗？当它们好像变成四盏时，就说明你已经喝够了，该回家了。” “但是，爸爸，”汤姆说，“我看到酒吧那头只有一盏灯啊。”
